Why is this medication prescribed?   

Soma, a muscle relaxant, is used with rest, physical therapy, and other measures to relax muscles and relieve pain and discomfort caused by strains, sprains, and other muscle injuries.

This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should this medicine be used?  

Soma comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken three times daily and at bedtime. It may be taken with or without food. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take soma exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

What special precautions should I follow?  

Soma, before taking.

  • tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to soma, meprobamate (Equanil, Meprospan, Miltown, Neuramate), or any other drugs.

  • tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially medications for allergies, coughs, or colds; muscle relaxants; sedatives; sleeping pills; tranquilizers; and vitamins.

  • tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease.

  • tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking soma, call your doctor.

  • you should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how soma affects you.

  • remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.

Soma, what special dietary instructions should I follow?

Soma may cause an upset stomach. Take soma with food or milk.

Soma, what should I do if I forget a dose?  

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

What side effects can this medication cause?  

Soma may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • drowsiness

  • dizziness

  • clumsiness

  • headache

  • fast heart rate

  • upset stomach

  • vomiting

  • skin rash

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

  • difficulty breathing

  • fever

  • weakness

  • burning in the eyes

What storage conditions are needed for this medicine?   

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from moisture and heat (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

In case of emergency/overdose  

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services.

What other information should I know?  

Keep all appointments with your doctor.

Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

The medication that David is taking is CARISOPRODOL. It is aSKELETAL MUSCLE RELAXANT.

INDICATIONS
Carisoprodol is indicated as an adjunct to rest, physical therapy, and other measures for the relief of discomfort associated with acute, painful, musculoskeletal conditions. The mode of action of this drug has not been clearly identified, but may be related to its sedative properties. Carisoprodol does not directly relax tense skeletal muscles in man.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

The usual adult dosage of carisoprodol is one 350 mg tablet, three times daily and at bedtime. Usage in patients under age 12 is not recommended.

David takes one tablet at bedtime only.

Remember each of us is different. What helps one my not help another. He is also taking prozak and buspar. I do not know why this med has helped him unless its because of the sedative prperties. just glad it does.

Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. What side effects may I notice from taking carisoprodol?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

.confusion
.difficulty breathing
.fainting spells
.skin rash or redness
.trembling
.unsteadiness
.unusual weakness or tiredness

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

.drowsiness or dizziness
.flushing (reddening of skin)
.headache
.nausea, vomiting

What do I need to watch for while I take carisoprodol?

You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how carisoprodol affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Alcohol can make you more drowsy; avoid alcoholic drinks.

Where can I keep my medicine?
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature between 15 and 30°C (59 and 86°F). Protect from moisture. Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

DESCRIPTION

Soma tablets are available as 350 mg round, white tablets. Chemically, carisoprodol is N-isopropyl-2-methyl-2-propyl-1,3-propanediol dicarbamate. Carisoprodol is a white, crystalline powder, having a mild, characteristic odor and a bitter taste.

It is very slightly soluble in water; freely soluble in alcohol, in chloroform, and in acetone; its solubility is practically independent of pH. Carisoprodol is present as a racemic mixture. The molecular formula is C12H24N2O4, with a molecular weight of 260.33.

Other ingredients include alginic acid, magnesium stearate, potassium sorbate, starch, tribasic calcium phosphate.
